Wind Memory

Wind Memory, 2023, Video Installation at Toi Rauwhārangi

One of the things my mother said really struck me, as a good representation for my feelings about memory and legacy.  ‘Family folklore can warp or change with the telling’.  Even as she and my aunt spoke their memories aloud to each other, they were aware that the retelling is imperfect, that what they had heard or seen may not have been accurate, or may have been coloured by their particular perspective.  Hilary Mantel, in her Reith Lectures, said ‘As soon as we die, we enter into fiction. Just ask two different family members to tell you about someone recently gone, and you will see what I mean. Once we can no longer speak for ourselves, we are interpreted’.

This is my first ever attempt at making video. Imperfect, but still a good representation of how I see and think.
